Bye Friendster Blog !!

May 20th, 2007 by eckw

I guess this will be the last time, I’ll be updating this blog. Plan to shift to wordpress. Err, actually shifted to wordpress already. So, this is the last time that you will see a notification in your email and said that I updated this blog.

Here’s the link to my new blog if you are still interested.

No more ads there and all though annoying smileys and no more email pop up from here. But will still keep this blog here instead of deleting. A bit sentimental a few of the posts. For all those who has been reading, thank you for your time. For those who have commented to me here or anywhere else, thanks for your inputs. I really really appreciate it. Bye.

PMR Again ??

April 29th, 2007 by eckw

Well, the end of my 2nd year is beckoning. By right, it should be like preparing for PMR if I compare my university time to my secondary school time.

Looking ahead, I’ve got a difficult decision to make. It’s about whether to take Mini Project or Multimedia Technology Applications for the next trimester. For Mini Project, I will most certainly choose the MP3 Player project, where I will be building a MP3 player, although not as flashy as those at the current market, but still the underlying challenge is pretty tough I guess. I think most unchartered territory are considered tough because we human beings in general tend to treat things cautiously whenever facing an unknown quantity.

The basic circuit of the project should be relatively straightforward if what WOSiew says holds true. The hard part is the programming part where we are required to read the mp3 files from the SD card, and of course we will have our own SD card reader. Another challenge is to output it to the analog form because the data that we have, I mean mp3, are digital in nature and we need to convert it to analog format using a DAC converter. I don’t know whether there will be any programming part to do here. But then, programming shouldn’t be a big problem for me compared to doing complicated hardware circuits. The thing that is holding me back from doing this is that traditionally, it is harder to obtain good grades in Mini Project than in MTA. Furthermore, there are tones of work to do in Mini Project(I’ll refer to MP from here onwards, lazy to type long). The schedule for it is 6 hours weekly compared to 4 hours for MTA where MTA has an extra 6 hour lab session somewhere in between the 14 week trimester.

MTA, however, have some bad points itself. The good thing in studying MTA is that it is easy to score. Furthermore, the thing that we study relates to computer more than any other major, of course except multimedia. But for MP, there is a general perception among seniors that it will help greatly when you are doing your Final Year Project during your final year. Whereas MTA, doesn’t help that much. If taking FYP’s credit hours into play, it will be 13 hours(potentially) worth of work done, if I take MP. But then have to sacrifice the other subjects I take during next trimester. Whilst MTA although will guarantee (almost certainly) an A, is only worth 3 credit hours and valuable time for the other subjects next trimester. I mean that I will have more time to study other subjects because it is less strenuous than MP.

I consider myself a decisive person, but this question asked is leaving me hesitating a little bit too much. I see a lot of my fellow classmates heading straight to MP without second thoughts. Plus all my seniors bar one currently, advises me to go for MP as well. To be honest, I’ve fixed my mind into doing MTA since some time ago, but recent developments really merits some reconsideration.

Potentially habitable planet found

April 24th, 2007 by eckw

WASHINGTON - For the first time astronomers have discovered a planet outside our solar system that is potentially habitable, with Earth-like temperatures, a find researchers described Tuesday as a big step in the search for “life in the universe.”

The planet is just the right size, might have water in liquid form, and in galactic terms is relatively nearby at 120 trillion miles away. But the star it closely orbits, known as a “red dwarf,” is much smaller, dimmer and cooler than our sun.

There’s still a lot that is unknown about the new planet, which could be deemed inhospitable to life once more is known about it. And it’s worth noting that scientists’ requirements for habitability count Mars in that category: a size relatively similar to Earth’s with temperatures that would permit liquid water. However, this is the first outside our solar system that meets those standards.

“It’s a significant step on the way to finding possible life in the universe,” said University of Geneva astronomer Michel Mayor, one of 11 European scientists on the team that found the planet. “It’s a nice discovery. We still have a lot of questions.”

The results of the discovery have not been published but have been submitted to the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics.

Alan Boss, who works at the Carnegie Institution of Washington where a U.S. team of astronomers competed in the hunt for an Earth-like planet, called it “a major milestone in this business.”

The planet was discovered by the European Southern Observatory’s telescope in La Silla, Chile, which has a special instrument that splits light to find wobbles in different wave lengths. Those wobbles can reveal the existence of other worlds.

What they revealed is a planet circling the red dwarf star, Gliese 581. Red dwarfs are low-energy, tiny stars that give off dim red light and last longer than stars like our sun. Until a few years ago, astronomers didn’t consider these stars as possible hosts of planets that might sustain life.

The discovery of the new planet, named 581 c, is sure to fuel studies of planets circling similar dim stars. About 80 percent of the stars near Earth are red dwarfs.

The new planet is about five times heavier than Earth. Its discoverers aren’t certain if it is rocky like Earth or if its a frozen ice ball with liquid water on the surface. If it is rocky like Earth, which is what the prevailing theory proposes, it has a diameter about 1 1/2 times bigger than our planet. If it is an iceball, as Mayor suggests, it would be even bigger.

Based on theory, 581 c should have an atmosphere, but what’s in that atmosphere is still a mystery and if it’s too thick that could make the planet’s surface temperature too hot, Mayor said.

However, the research team believes the average temperature to be somewhere between 32 and 104 degrees and that set off celebrations among astronomers.

Until now, all 220 planets astronomers have found outside our solar system have had the “Goldilocks problem.” They’ve been too hot, too cold or just plain too big and gaseous, like uninhabitable Jupiter.

The new planet seems just right — or at least that’s what scientists think.

“This could be very important,” said NASA astrobiology expert Chris McKay, who was not part of the discovery team. “It doesn’t mean there is life, but it means it’s an Earth-like planet in terms of potential habitability.”

Eventually astronomers will rack up discoveries of dozens, maybe even hundreds of planets considered habitable, the astronomers said. But this one — simply called “c” by its discoverers when they talk among themselves — will go down in cosmic history as No. 1.

Besides having the right temperature, the new planet is probably full of liquid water, hypothesizes Stephane Udry, the discovery team’s lead author and another Geneva astronomer. But that is based on theory about how planets form, not on any evidence, he said.

“Liquid water is critical to life as we know it,” co-author Xavier Delfosse of Grenoble University in France, said in a statement. “Because of its temperature and relative proximity, this planet will most probably be a very important target of the future space missions dedicated to the search for extraterrestrial life. On the treasure map of the Universe, one would be tempted to mark this planet with an X.”

Other astronomers cautioned it’s too early to tell whether there is water.

“You need more work to say it’s got water or it doesn’t have water,” said retired NASA astronomer Steve Maran, press officer for the American Astronomical Society. “You wouldn’t send a crew there assuming that when you get there, they’ll have enough water to get back.”

The new planet’s star system is a mere 20.5 light years away, making Gliese 581 one of the 100 closest stars to Earth. It’s so dim, you can’t see it without a telescope, but it’s somewhere in the constellation Libra, which is low in the southeastern sky during the midevening in the Northern Hemisphere.

“I expect there will be planets like Earth, but whether they have life is another question,” said renowned astrophysicist Stephen Hawking in an interview with The Associated Press in Orlando. “We haven’t been visited by little green men yet.”

Before you book your extrastellar flight to 581 c, a few caveats about how alien that world probably is: Anyone sitting on the planet would get heavier quickly, and birthdays would add up fast since it orbits its star every 13 days.

Gravity is 1.6 times as strong as Earth’s so a 150-pound person would feel like 240 pounds.

But oh, the view. The planet is 14 times closer to the star it orbits. Udry figures the red dwarf star would hang in the sky at a size 20 times larger than our moon. And it’s likely, but still not known, that the planet doesn’t rotate, so one side would always be sunlit and the other dark.

Distance is another problem. “We don’t know how to get to those places in a human lifetime,” Maran said.

Two teams of astronomers, one in Europe and one in the United States, have been racing to be the first to find a planet like 581 c outside the solar system.

The European team looked at 100 different stars using a tool called HARPS (High Accuracy Radial Velocity for Planetary Searcher) to find this one planet, said Xavier Bonfils of the Lisbon Observatory, one of the co-discoverers.

Much of the effort to find Earth-like planets has focused on stars like our sun with the challenge being to find a planet the right distance from the star it orbits. About 90 percent of the time, the European telescope focused its search more on sun-like stars, Udry said.

A few weeks before the European discovery earlier this month, a scientific paper in the journal Astrobiology theorized a few days that red dwarf stars were good candidates.

“Now we have the possibility to find many more,” Bonfils said.

So I’ll skip the normal intro part as in like most of my entry. Something along the lines of “long time din’t update” thingy. It’s boring I know, and I’m just being considerate for my small section of readers.

I did a survey or actually browsing through different peoples’ blogs and noticed that they actually write short entries with a better frequency. Unlike my style of pouring everything on one go. And I guess it is good to discuss about my style of writing blog, about time now to hold a check into how I write things. I see that my entries are very disorganized. Mainly because of me writing impromptu entries. I didn’t really have the urge or enthusiasm to write here nowadays. It used to be I have a lot of things to want to bury here, but by the time I switch on my computer, I’m really lost on what to write.

I feel that, this place is not as private as I think it will be, which is a bit of sad. It puts a chain around me and didn’t really liberate me from writing directly from my thoughts. Instead, honest assessments are censored by analogies and examples and I even distorted a few things here and there, that did make me feel uneasy. I don’t have that much space to be as transparent as I think I would have. I actually did entries on some historical things in me. As in, write things that happened long ago, so that people might forget actually the date of happening. Not to be manipulating or cheating you guys, just that, I don’t want to hurt other people’s feelings indirectly. Especially when I’m unaware of it. I can’t even say sorry directly to you because I wouldn’t expect you to read this and sometimes there will be a miscommunication about what I am trying to say. Or actually the heat at the moment I write is too much, and I would realise something I didn’t realise earlier. Sometimes it’s just a rant of frustration, but I sincerely hope that you guys will treat it as a light reading and don’t really think to much of it.

Normally, I’m not a person that likes to compare myself to other people. Not since a long time ago. By browsing through other people’s blog, I expect to see what interesting stuffs they will write, and I normally visit blogs that I think will give me some knowledge about their current situation, indirectly, I observe something and learn their patterns of writing. Their style and so on, and sometimes it can be very funny because their appearance fooled you if you read their blogs or maybe they want to fool you through their blog since they can’t do it appearance wise. Comparisons and competitions can be hazardous if you don’t treat it the way it should be treated. The moment I understand the uselessness of comparisions, it frees me from a considerable amount of pressure. But with a bad side effect. People don’t really see what you see. People still keep looking out for weaknesses and picks the mickey out of you and you spend your time and effort ironing all the flaws that you have in order to continue the useless fights to prove them wrong. In short, you are just living your lives in other peoples world, not yours.

It takes a hell lot of courage to walk your own way. I admit I’m weak and still far away from achieving that, but at least, I guess I’m a lot better than what people think I really am. We are using different barometers with different scales. You seemed to listenned to what other peoples gossips and predictions rather than asking for my frank explaination. Of course my explaination will be ridiculous to you. But when the time to really have a real gauge of things, What Happened To Your Barometer ?? Of course, it is just by chance that I punch above my weight it seems. I remember there was a guy that said the hardest thing to do in your decision to do something big, is to start it. Suddenly I wondered what happened to him. Check it out if you are interested. Just a brief description, his name is Argus Caruso, I don’t know how I can remember his name correctly, I guess I’ve bookmarked his quote, along with his name, when I get to see him. Never knew it was that significant at that time. Anyway, He was supposed to cycle around the world and he somehow stopped by our school at that time and gives us a talk and share his experiences. I guess he had a infuence in how I deal with things currently. I consider a lot of things before going with the decision whether to do or not to do a particular stuff. Sometimes people might see me as a decisive guy, but then that is not really related to him, I just don’t want to procrastinate on unnecessary stuffs.

Oops, suddenly I scrolled up and looked at the title, banana king… It’s a game that looked rather childish and stupid because the game is about how you manage your banana plantations. It’s about harvesting bananas from your plantations. There are a few main variables to work on. Harvesting -> determines the total yield that you can harvest after a cultivation. Trading-> will give you a better selling price of your all your planted bananas. Then there is a twist, you can actually sabotage people for their bananas or cash to gain some extra bonus cash to climb up the ladder. Of course, you are subject to attack as well if you don’t take care your defense well enough. At one point, I thought I got the mathematical calculation of my selling point correct, hence, better knowledge in where to upgrade my stats. But then, my hypothesis lasted only for three days before the price went out of control. The second thing that I managed to work out is the geometrical series increment on the plantation field prices per field. As in the second field will cost 100, the third will cost 400 the fourth, 900 and so on. It is a nice game to fill in my one hour break during lectures. And of course, no obligation to go there everyday. Of course I hope you all will join my army!

And one more trait in my entries is that I tend to drift from one point to another without any warning, at least most of the time. And that I used to use parenthesis to describe something dumb or supposed entertainment remarks. Haha, last but not least, I’m BACK !! But then, who knows when will I update this again…

Title : Stunning Effects, Cruel Actions :p

The following photos are taken from a hotel in Beijing. The effects was stunning, but it was a little bit cruel. The fish inside the aquarium can only survive for only six days, after that, a new school of fish will replace it.

Adaptability

January 26th, 2007 by eckw

Adapting is a skill that shows how well you can integrate yourself into the environment. It’s more sort of a mental and emotional test that helps if you are really good at it. I think that I possess a great amount of that. But then, I don’t really feel that it is that good as we think it is. Actually not that it is a bad thing to have, but I kind of notice the other side of the coin.

Imagine a chameleon. It has a great ability to change itself to whatever it wanted to survive. When it is near the leaves, it becomes green; when it is near the branches or tree trunks, it turned brown; when it is lazing on the rocks, it might be grayish. Ok, so now, if you put it in a fresh water, I guess it is quite tough for it to survive its predators, so I guess it will turn into the colour that is not that much visible perhaps. And let’s say that we put it in a vacuum box or put it alone, what colour will it be? To be honest I don’t really know what colour a chameleon is, but I guess it will turn back into its own colour right? Lets assume that I’m right. If a chameleon that lived for years near the leaves without really moving away, it meant that it will be green for a very long time. Then if you suddenly put it in a rocky place, will it remember how to change its colour after years of being green without changing? Err… I guess I’m going nowhere near the thing I wanna bring up.

Ok, so straight to the point. One thing I want to challenge about adaptability is identity. Of course you can change from whatever you want to whatever you want effortlessly. But if given a free choice to choose what you really want to be, what you want to be? Talking about chameleon, it is quite an easy job for them to choose what colour they want or they can just do nothing then they will get their own self back. If we put a human being’s emotion into the microscope of adaptability, it is quite hard for them or us to change our emotional approach to different subjects. In one situation, we are very aggressive and very violent, very enthusiastic. In another situation, we are passive, timid and accept whatever that comes along. Plus most of the time you are bouncing between the two extremes. As time goes on, you question who you really are. What is it that is really you? People that don’t adapt much don’t have a problem identifying themselves.

As a result, I guess we are living in the circumstances or should I say the scenario determines who you really is rather than you yourself determine who you are. Sad to say that myself is also a victim of the environment and a toy of space and time. I’ve been a guy who is seriously carefree, one that doesn’t have ambition(erm, realistic ones); one that strives to maintain the pride of my family; one that isolates myself from my family; one that lives totally alone; one that hang out with friends quite a lot; one that didn’t trust other people at all; one that is not trusted by the closest people associated to you; and the list goes on…..

For a period in my life, I’ve struggled about my identity. I asked myself repeatedly who I am? What I want? Am I happy with things around me? And countless dumb questions. Yup, dumb but it was damn important to me. I used to ask text my friends esp during my birthday last time. I’ve always ask what do you all think about me? I was actually trying to see how I was being portrayed on other peoples eyes and of course learn more about myself. Usually those replies are kind, in a way comforting. But then, that is not what I wanted. I am seeking criticism honest ones(Maybe they can’t find fault with me?). But then, I ditched the idea since…

Oh… It’s late now, so I have to think of a conclusion now… I planned to rebuild my mentality to be very flexible yet, with a clear, unique identity. The idea is actually an analogy that is borrowed from Stan. He said that “an apple that fall not too far from the tree”(I guess I misquoted him quite a bit here, just a rough idea). Yup, so the plan is to build or establish my personal principles as the centre of my idealogy. Or in other words a set of laws that I hope I will obey(quite hard for me to obey laws right? I know…..). And put a perimeter or radius around the center and may that be the limits that I can oscillate from here to there, which I can easily adapt and still stay defined.

Logo Challenge

December 24th, 2006 by eckw

Eweek_2

vs
Eweek_1

Long time didn’t update my blog already. But first time update with photos.

Ok, lets talk about the two logos. The story is like this. Long time ago, Ying Fei said that the E-week logo will be designed by the malacca people. Then they came out with a design which is on the right. Yup, the orange pacman thingy.

So, people got infuriated, to some sort of “WTF”, and into the comparison of pacman. That’s three people that i know said that at first glance including myself of course. Then we had ying fei respond to the publicity guy from melaka. The thing is that they or he(not sure who’s doing the logo, most prolly the publicity director itself), felt that we offended him. To be frank, the comments sent or forwarded were quite harsh. But does the logo deserve that type of critism ? He’d been so lucky I didn’t say a thing there, but of course, I would love to see what inspired him to design that logo. And the colour selection is just… Maybe he think it is too ordinary using blue and red(colours of MMU, and my ultimate ultimately my design which was based on that same set of colours.

Fine, so, he responded that he will do some editting and then “thanked” us for the SUGGESTION. You can imagine how pissed off he was at that time and using that type of wording when he replied. And the main thing is, he challenged us to come up with a logo to compete with his. Compete? He suggested that we have a vote once we finalised our logo and see which one is accepted. So, fine, Simon accepted his challenge, recruiting some FCM students to do it for us might be a good idea. But I wanna try my hand on doing this thing because I think even I also can pawn his with that sort of design. Remember last time form 3, I’d never got ‘B’ for my art. Wow…. Fuiyoh…. Phew–wit !!! Wait, wait, wait the best I got was just ‘C’. So, yesterday, I spent the whole day daydreaming and sitting silently, thinking and pondering about life(in general) and my own life. Practically, I got depressed for the whole day and I can’t pick myself out of it, hence I slept myself out of it. And when I wake up, I feel like doing something that will inject a bit of competiveness in my spirit. Hence I played minesweeper(I know, I swayed out of topic, but remember: This is my blog.)(Did you notice that I bold the fullstop?) ok. So I played minesweeper at chee seng’s computer, because I felt lazy to setup my computer and …. just say that i’m lazy ok?!(Not bad, you noticed.) Then I felt that my mouse that I’m using currently(my own mouse) is a bit shitty compared to chee seng’s. The times I set was quite good, until I accidentally bettered his record. For a moment I was like, oh shit, now I would have to ‘restore’ his scores back. So i spend some time doing that. Why ? Because I taught him playing or at least a bit, so I don’t want his morale to dip when he sees the score. (NO sarcasm meant ok!!)

So I feel I would have a good day ahead since I set good times which indirectly means my brain should be functioning alright today. So I came to my own computer and then nope, this time I didn’t play minesweeper. Time to swing back into the topic just now(commercial break ended. PLAY MINESWEEPER. Start->Programs->Games->Minesweeper->Click.Click..Click.Click………….). Ya I know it’s dumb but remember:- My Blog !! So, suddenly, I feel like drawing something. Hehehehe. So I thought of how to present Eweek as a Logo. I’ve thought of using sophisticated 3D or engineering thing that shows the skeleton of blocks or things like that. But then, that was more sort of copycatting from engsoc’s shirt. So, too bad, the only choice is using an E or an e. Then I felt e is easier to manipulate since it’s continuous as in one stroke letter and you can have more design options because it is rounder and not as stupid squarish like E like us engineers which just do core stuff. I need something that can be packaged and doesn’t look boring. Then I was considering something that can more represent engineering rather than E. By the way, e kept make me thinking of internet explorer. Until I suddenly recalled sigma !! The sign currently residing in the blue sphere(I know it is just a circle here, but please, imagine). So, I quickly open my photoshop. Well, I can’t find photoshop in my computer because I didn’t installed it! Never knew I would have the need to use it. So, nevermind, there is always Paint there ! So I opened MsPaint and then watch me go!! But…..

I never knew that MsPaint was damn ciplak. So useless. I have to use a rectangular thing to select something, in order to move. Not like the drag and move thing that we are used to. I guess I seriously don’t like drawing. When was the last time I draw ?? I don’t want to think too deeply about it. So… Initially I was having the idea of a sphere(The logo has to be 3D since we are engineers!) and then there will be 7 outer segments surrounding the circle(imaginary sphere). The 7 outer segments(err… imaginary also) will display different activities that we are going to have during Eweek. Most prolly just insert the word into the segments. That’s why the segments are just imaginary because words only ma. Then the sphere will be blue, with different tone, to somehow generate a 3D feeling like the contour concept. Then of course the sigma in the middle of everything. By the way, 7 segments to represent week. Needless to say why right ?

With an initial idea in place, it is time to spill them all out in paint. So I select those pencil icons and the bucket icons and hell, it cause me serious problems until i have to read the tutorials. So, I decided to close MsPaint, and then, haha, open MSWord. Wait, rewind a few sentence. I tried doing the 7 outer segment thing surrounding my circle. I felt that it looks more like “roda impian” a.k.a. “wheel of fortune” or vice versa. (WTF right ?) So, The sphere stays, the sigma stays. Now how to represent week ? To be frank, I can’t pull out any rabbit from my hat d, so, just use the traditional word art and just type week loh !! Then spin it a bit here and there to make it look nice with the sigma. Then I thought, why not putting sigma as an word art, then more fun loh!! For me, sigma looks nice just like that. In a text box, sitting nicely in the middle. But then, try using word art and see what wonders it can do. So, try putting a sigma into the word art and then you will see what happen. You will see a lenglui face appear out !! Woohoo… and I’m not kidding. Try it !!

So if you’d tried, you know, have sigma have to sit nicely in my textbox. So, i think my logo was about time to pass up. But wait !! What happened to the 3D thing ? The different colour tone doesn’t make the circle appears as a sphere !! I guess it is prolly mainly because of that stupid sigma thing. So, have to find some expert to sort it out for me. So I browse through my list in msn, then tersaw hui bing there. FCM student, time for you to shine !!! Then I gave her the pic, ask her to 3D-ize it. Then she said, she’s not in cyber, using home pc. So, recommended me to use 3Dmax, illustrator and say a lot of things like how to change the dimensions of the sigma, use some shadow thing in photoshop. In the end, ok, she turned my head upside down, and hell, I have to download illustrator, but then the webpage said 73.2MB installer size. Then I said f@@k it, I’ll just describe a bit here and there, then ask someone else to draw or maybe inspire others to create their own designs as well !!

So that’s how this how logo thing came out, i mean the left one. And i put it in white background and dark background just to see for fun. I can’t say which one looks nice as in the white background or dark background. It will be better if the sigma is 3D and tone the colours accordingly to the sphere so that it doesn’t look that fake. And for the week thing, to remove or not to remove ? I guess i’ll just leave it there, not as if people will be taking this design and print the banners and t-shirt with my logo right ? But I seriously hope the first logo looks better than the second one, if not, i’ll cry…… lol.

To make my logo sound more professional and to present it in a more formal way, I hope you all can erase whatever you all read just now including the advertisement break(Yup, the minesweeper ad). E-week. Engineering week. Engineering ? It can be civil -> skyscraper buildings; electronics -> semiconductors, processors etc; mechanical -> machines and so on. For me, this logo describes engineering as a summation of atoms. As atom is the basic building block of all things, even us. God engineered us, We engineer the world.

This post is made possible based on just a small feeling of making my point. I understand that critics will come. But then I felt a sense of pride for me being barraged by trying, than me barraging people who tried. I for once tried being creative, and not stopping other people from being creative. Now enough of BS, time to go study…
